Baskara T. Wardaya is an Indonesian national and a professor of history at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in History from Marquette University (2001), in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. During his studies and upon the completion of his studies he has been conducting research on post-independence Indonesia, especially with regard to the 1965 anti-communist purge, its international context and its impact. In 2004-2005 he did postdoctoral research in the US, sponsored by Fulbright scholarship. In 2011-2012 he was awarded Fulbright Scholar in Residence grant to teach history at the University of California-Riverside, USA. In 2014 he received grant from AIFIS (American Institute for Indonesian Studies) to do research on US-Indonesian relations during the administration of President Richard Nixon (1969-1974).
He has published a number of articles and books on Indonesia’s post-1945 history and mass violence, including Cold War Shadow: United States Policy toward Indonesia, 1953-1963 (Yogyakarta: 2007); Truth Will Out: Indonesian Accounts of the 1965 Mass Violence (editor; Melbourne, Australia: 2013); and Bung Karno Menggugat (Sukarno Accuses; Yogyakarta: 2006). With Bernd Schaefer he co-edited 1965: Indonesia and the World/Indonesia dan Dunia (Jakarta: 2013).
