Judit Bokser Liwerant

Prof. Judit Bokser Liwerant was born in Argentina and has been living in Mexico since 1968. She is married to Daniel Liwerant, a Mexican lawyer graduated at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem that awarded him a Honoris Causa Doctorate. They have two sons, Mark, a Communication graduate from the Universidad Iberoamericana, in Mexico City, and Gad, who holds a Master in Design and Architecture from Harvard University. She has five grandchildren.

Bokser Liwerant holds a BA and a Master degree in Sociology and Political Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and earns a PhD in Political Science (summa cum laude) from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Her doctorate research focused on theoretical and practical responses of Judaism to Modernity.

She is currently a Full-Time Professor of Political Science at the School of Social and Political Science at UNAM, where she has been teaching and researching since 1970.

She has been appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem since 2014, where she has developed both research and teaching activities. Her presence during the last decade enhanced the development of studies

Prof. Bokser Liwerant is member of the Mexican Academy of Science and a distinguished member of the National Research System of the National Council of Science and Technology.

From 1996 to 2012 she headed the Graduate School of Political and Social Sciences at the UNAM, one of the top Latin American post-graduate programs whose academic reform she led. As a result, 1,493 students graduated between 2000 and 2012: 1,002 at MA level and 491 at doctoral level.

She is currently the director and chief editor of the Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales (Mexican Journal of Political and Social Sciences), as well as co-editor of the series Jewish Identities in a Changing World (Brill Editorial House).

She pioneered contemporary Judaic studies at university level in Mexico, establishing the first Jewish Studies Program at the Universidad Iberoamericana, that has been offered together with the International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and she also headed the Academic Committee of the Hebraic University in Mexico.

Prof. Bokser Liwerant is member of numerous national and international scientific associations and has been visiting professor at several universities both in Mexico and abroad.

Some of the awards and recognitions she has been bestowed are: four Medals and Diplomas to Academic Merit (UNAM, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011), for outstanding teaching and research contributions; the Academic of the Year award (Instituto Cultural México-Israel, 1999); the Raúl Cardiel Reyes medal to Academic Merit in Political Science (UNAM, 2004); the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz medal, awarded to distinguished female academics in the field of social sciences (UNAM, 2007); the Max Fisher International Prize in Education (Israel, 2007), and the National University Prize for Research in Social Sciences (UNAM, 2015).

She has taught 136 courses and seminars and has been visiting professor at several prestigious universities, including: McGill University (Canada); Eckstein Scholar in Residence, Arizona State University (USA); Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, (France); San Martin University Chair (Argentina); and Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Prof. Bokser Liwerant academic career represents a recognized contribution to the Mexican academic presence in international fora while she has simultaneously developed innovative topics and conceptual approaches.
