  • Biography

    Shalini Randeria is Rector of the Institute for Human Sciences, Vienna as well as professor of Social Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, where she heads the Albert Hirschman Centre for Democracies and is also a visiting professor at the Social Science Research Centre, Berlin.

    She chaired the SH-2 Review Panel for Consolidator Grants at the ERC, was a Fellow of Wissenschaftskolleg, Berlin, served as President of the European Association of Social Anthropologists and as Member of the Senate of the German Research Council. She served as Deputy Chair of the World Council of Anthropological Associations and the Editorial Board of the Annual Review of Anthropology and is currently a member of the Editorial Board of American Ethnologist. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Central European University (CEU) Budapest and of the Advisory Board of the Higher Education Support Program (HESP) of the Open Society Foundation, NY.

    She was founding chair of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Central European University, Budapest and has held visiting professorships at the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, the University of Vienna, and EHESS, Paris. She has published widely on the anthropology of globalization, law, the state, and social movements. Her empirical research on India also addresses issues of postcoloniality and multiple modernities.

    Her publications include the edited volumes: Border Crossings: Grenzverschiebungen und Grenzüberschreitungen in einer globalisierten Welt (2016); Politics of the Urban Poor, Special Issue of Current Anthropology (2015); Anthropology: Now and Next (2014); Jenseits des Eurozentrismus: Postkoloniale Perspektiven in den Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften (2014 extended second edition); Critical Mobilities (2013); Vom Imperialismus zum Empire: Nicht-westliche Perspektiven auf Globalisierung (2009).
